  • New Covenant Bible Church is a very healthy church. Our family’s first Sunday (our first month in Cedar Rapids) the greeter walked us to the nursery for our child, then walked us over to meet the Executive Pastor where I learned about men’s ministry. Within a few months we were attending a small group and other ministries, which is where we have made lifelong friends. The more I get involved and learn about the church the more I am impressed with the character and integrity of its leadership.

If one uses the New Testament definition of the local church and its focus of being the pillar and ground of the truth (1 Tim. 3:15), it should follow that a "Bible church" should be focused on the expository teaching of sound doctrine from the Word of God to its members....rather than to entertain and promote activities.

Most of the reviews on NCBC center on how "nice and friendly" everyone is. (Guess what...the Mormons, Jehovah Witnesses and Seventh Day Adventists are just as friendly.) Rarely will you see any in-depth discussion on the doctrinal teaching and its quality. Why? It is simply not why people attend. More than half of the members don't even bring a Bible. Using an electronic source? I didn't see more than a few.

In my visits to NCBC, I see a Christian school with a church attached. Admittedly, this has become the formula for the average church today. And for many, it serves as a vehicle to increase membership. As a former resident of Houston, I was in the middle of Joel Olsteen country. If you want to see a formula for creating a mega church, just watch Joel. Almost zero Bible teaching and a whole lot of positive thinking and "Aw shucks theology". (2 Tim. 4:3)

The contemporary Christian music being played today seems to have a glaring omission: The name of Jesus Christ. You will see that name replaced with god and lord...though there be gods many and lords many. (1 Cor. 8:5) If you believe this an oversight, I challenge that it is no accident....it's a sign of the times. Check out the references to Jesus' name in the New Testament and what was accomplished in His name.
( Acts 4:12, 1 Cor. 1:2, Acts 3:6, etc.) If the Spirit is leading the music, there is no doubt as to Who the Spirit is glorifying. (John 16: 13-14)

The Bible translations used by NCBC are the New English Translation (NET) and the New Living Translation (NLT). The NET is the latest perversion derived from the Alexandrian Greek of Westcott and Hort; while the NLT is a rendition of Ken Taylor's Living Bible. Any Bible student can research the history of these translations. And more telling, the people who promote them and their doctrinal positions. With leadership that supposedly came from Dallas Theological Seminary, I would have expected much more. I see no resemblance to the theology that Lewis Sperry Chafer promoted (Separation, exposing doctrinal error, clear gospel presentation, systematic theology, etc.)

  • The New Covenant Bible Church web site states that its purpose as "to honor God as a family of growing disciples." My experience has been that this church community lives out its purpose well. There are ample opportunities to participate in spiritually nourishing activities such as large group worship services, biblical teaching, weekly small groups, and mentoring. There are also many opportunities to invest back into the church community through volunteering. I really enjoy the library, and the volunteer-run cafe is a great place to chat with a friend. I was glad to hear that all profits from the cafe are donated to both local and world charities. The Cedar Rapids area is fortunate to have many strong church communities, including New Covenant.
